Black Opals are actually not black, they have a natural backing to them called 'potch' , it is this porch that gives them their dark body colour. Of all gemstones, Opals are the true masters of light diffraction.

These Opals are exceptionally rare, as they come from a particular location: Lighting Ridge, Australia. Finding them aren't easy as after investing tens of thousands of dollars, a miner may not find a single gem!

The exclusivity of these posh stones, and it's unique colours, make it one of the most expensive gemstones in the world. High quality  black opals can cost $1000 per carat!
